1988 Port Huron High School Baseball Team
Year Inducted: 2024
The 1988 Port Huron High School Baseball Team, coached by Dick Hillaker, reached the MHSAA Semi-Finals before losing to the eventual State Champions from Birmingham Seaholm. This team caught the imagination and support of the entire Big Red Community. Some of the team’s accomplishments included:
- 21 wins
- Tied Grosse Pointe South and East Detroit for the MAC Championship with a 10-4
- Repeated as Richmond Tournament Champions.
- They put together five and eight game winning streaks. As a result, they won 13 of 14 down the crucial part of their schedule.
- They defeated a strong Grosse Pointe South team in the final league game to secure the tie for the league championship.
- They qualified for the districts by defeating a strong Chippewa Valley team in the pre-district qualifier.
- They defeated Utica Ford and L’Anse Creuse to win the District championship.
- They defeated Flint Powers and Mt. Pleasant to win their first ever Regional title.
- They lost in the Semi-Final to the eventual State Champions Birmingham Seaholm at Michigan State University.
As coach Hillaker said, “They were all winners in achieving the Final Four berth.”
The team was led by the outstanding pitching of Trevor Lawson and Tom Wilson. Trevor was 8-4 with a 1.82 ERA and Tom finished 6-1 with a 1.43 ERA.
Team members included William DeBell, Daniel Dell, Jeff Dennis, John Diaz, James Feher, James Fournier, Dennis Fowler, Jerry Frizzle, Chris James, Ray Jokie, Scott Kuschel, Trevor Lawson, David Lohr, Brett Mullins, Scott Nichols (deceased), Gerald Stein, Leigh Stroh, and Tom Wilson.
Head Coach Dick Hillaker is a member of the MHSCA Hall of Fame. Tim Owens was the Assistant Coach. The scorekeepers were Denise Van Luven and Margaret Ryckman.
