1990-91 Port Huron Northern Boys Basketball Team

The Port Huron Northern boys basketball team enjoyed a magical season on the court during the 1990-91 school year.

The Huskies put together an impressive regular season and playoff run. They Huskies finished second in the Macomb Area Conference Red Division and captured the school’s first MHSAA district and regionals titles.

To claim the district title, the Huskies defeated Port Huron High 67-65, L’Anse Creuse North 63-57 in the semifinals and Anchor Bay 93-63 in the finals. In the regionals, Northern knocked off No. 4 Pontiac Central 78-61 and Utica Ford 78-61.

Coach Dan Hanton’s squad finished with a school-record 22 wins and tied for fifth in the final Class A state poll, reached the quarterfinals. The Huskies were defeated 78-60 by No. 1-ranked Detroit Southwestern, which featured Jalen Rose, Vashon Leonard and a host of NCAA Division 1 players.

The five Northern starters received Macomb Area Conference Red Division and Times Herald All-Blue Water Area recognition. Brian Jamison, Todd Blomquist and Brian Hanton landed Detroit News All-State recognition. Eleven of the team members were All-Academic MAC Red Division.

Northern, which defeated two Top 10 ranked Class A teams, scored 1,925 points in 26 games, which was a school record 74.0 points per game average. Four of the starters shot better than 57% from the floor.

The team members were Jon Pickett, Sean Gladwish, Norman Cosgrove, Kurt Crosby, David Danko, Bobby Wright, Hanton, Jamison, Rob Dawson, Blomquist, Blake Nelson, Chris Hall, Marv Dupree, Andrae Powell and Tony Powell.

Hanton was assisted by Jim Bates. Craig Dahlke coached the junior varsity team and David Tchozewski was in charge of the ninth-grade squad.
