1994-95 SC4 Skippers Basketball Team
Year Inducted: 2013
The St. Clair County Community College women’s basketball team worked overtime in its bid for a national championship during the 1994-95 season. The Lady Skippers went not one, not two but three overtimes.
SC4 finished second in the country after falling 94-89 in triple overtime to Kankakee Community College (Ill.) March 18, 1995 in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II title contest.
It was an emotional season for the nine-player squad as popular coach Paul Jackson of Marysville died of cancer on July 13, 1994. In August, Chris Huss was named the coach. When the season started, the players were more determined than ever to win the national title in honor of Jackson.
The Lady Skippers posted a 29-4 won-loss record. The 29 wins were a school record before the SC4 women’s squad surpassed the mark during the 2012-13 season.
At the Nationals in Hagerstown, MD., SC4 opened with a dominating 77-48 victory against Lackawanna (PA.). The Lady Skippers pulled out a 72-71 triumph against Chattahooche Valley (AL.) in the semifinals as St. Clair graduate Alicia Kollmorgen hit the winning basket with 30 seconds left. She finished with 29 points and 10 rebounds.
In the championship game, Jenny Storm, the team’s second leading scorer, fouled out in the first overtime. Kollmorgen, who led the team in scoring and rebounding, went to the bench with five fouls in the second overtime and St. Clair grad Jill Schweihofer fouled out in the third overtime period.
Kollmorgen and Storm landed a spot on the National All-Tournament Team. Storm was the Region XII Player of the Tournament.
Huss was assisted by Carrie Hickson, a Sandusky graduate and former Skipper standout.
Under Huss, the Lady Skippers won their fourth consecutive Michigan Community College Athletic Association Eastern Conference title. In the state tournament, SC4 lost to defending national champion Southwestern CC. SC4 captured a 51-42 victory over Lake Michigan CC in the finals of the Region XII Tournament to qualify for the nationals.
