In 1972 as a junior at Port Huron High School, he had a 3-3 win-loss record. In his Eastern Michigan League Championship senior season, his statistics read: 53 2/3 innings pitched, 8-0 W/L, 3 runs allowed, 1 earned (.13 ERA!), 27 hits, 71 strikeouts, 12 walks and 6 shutouts. In summer amateur play, he won 45 games over four seasons (1972-75) including 21 in a row over the 1974-75 seasons. At SC4, he was 11-2 with an ERA under 2.00. At Western Michigan, he was 6-2 with a 1.86 ERA during his junior year and was selected Pitcher MAC All-Conference Team. He suffered a career ending injury his senior year. He never had a single year with an ERA over 2.00.
