Jerry participated in football, basketball, softball and track at Garfield Jr. High. At Port Huron Northern, he participated in three years of football, two years of basketball and three years of track. At Central Michigan University, he played four years of football and track. He then coached football and track at Yale High School, Port Huron High School, Waterford Kettering High School, Utica High School and Utica Stevenson High School. He was athletic director for Utica Stevenson High School from 1967-1993.
