John Bacheller

Year Inducted: 2022

This year's Wilfred Malloy Award winner is John Bacheller.  For over 40 years, John has donated his time to various athletes in various sports to the betterment of this community.  In the 1980s and 90s, John ran the YMCA volleyball leagues. He coached girls volleyball at McCormick Academy and AYSO soccer.  As a board member of Port Huron Competitive Sports for many years, John has been part of city champion teams in basketball, volleyball, softball, and hockey, including a National Championship in men’s adult hockey for players 70 years old and over.

John's greatest passion is his involvement in men’s senior hockey.  As president of the Golden Eagles Senior Men's League, John has organized tournaments in several Michigan cities and Florida. With connections in Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Ontario, and Michigan, John started the Stanley Keg Tournament in 2012 that has raised over $30,000 for local charities, including SC4 scholarships, the YMCA, and the local Minor Hockey Association.  The success of this league is primarily due to John's commitment to fairness and competitiveness.

John was a member of the Ironworkers Hockey Team, a team of 70+ year olds that won the USA Adult National Championship this past April in Wesley Chapel, Florida.

John leads with vision and by example. He is the oldest of three sons to Lester "Ace" and Alma Bacheller.  John married Elaine Pickelhaupt in 1974, and has a daughter, Alexandra Tess.
