Leo Frank 'Firpo' Draveling - Football & Wrestling

Year Inducted: 2003

When one reads the sports pages of the Port Huron Herald in 1925 and 1926, one of the names that constantly appear is Firpo Draveling. What makes that surprising is he was an interior lineman on the PHHS football team. in 1925 the team was undefeated and unscored upon. Playing either right or left tackle usually does not garner press accolades. His outstanding play and rock-like defense changed that. In a game against Royal Oak in 1926, the team was down 12-0 at the half. In the second half, Draveling blocked four passes and one punt which led to two touchdowns in a comeback 19-12 victory. He was named All-State in 1926. He went on to star at the University of Michigan as a wrestler and a football player in 1928-1930, playing left end and kicker. A ball that he kicked out of the Yost Field House Stadium is still on display there. Leo would have been an All-American in 1930 but for a move to interior lineman necessitated by a teammate's injury.
