From 1967 through 1970, Ron enjoyed a successful football and wrestling career at Port Huron Northern High School. He dominated the sport of wrestling by winning four varsity letters, three EML Championships and two district titles. Ron was crowned state champion for the 130 pound weight class in 1970 making him the first ever state champion in any sport at Port Huron Northern. He was also a member of the Huskies' famed "Thundering Herd" backfield, where he earned two All-EML Awards, two All-City selections and named to the second team Class "A" All-State team. He scored 29 touchdowns in eighteen varsity football games.
