Ronald L. 'Ron' Vercnocke - Basketball

Year Inducted: 2003

“Pure Shooter” is a description used sparingly to describe basketball players. Many have used it to describe Ron Vercnocke. He had a little step to the side just before his jump shot that caused his shot to be very hard to defend against and it was a deadly shot indeed.

Ronald L. Vercnocke was born June 6, 1941. He excelled early as a basketball player at Washington Junior High School. He went on to star at Port Huron High School and Port Huron Junior College. Every team he played on from 1958 through 1966 won or shared its league championship.

In 1959 he was MVP and top scorer and All-EML on the co-champ Big Reds. In 1959-60, he was top scorer on the Port Huron Junior College team. His 1960 Mueller Brass team was the league champion in Class A City Recreation. In 1961-62 he played on the Sarnia Teen Town Team that won the Class A Men’s City Rec. Championship and then the Canadian National Senior B Championship (this team was inducted into the Sarnia Hall of Fame in 1990). Sarnia Teen Town again won the City Rec. Championship in Class A in 1962-63. New team-same result with Dave’s Hardware in ’63-’64. Dave’s Hardware won the Class A championship again in ’64-’65 and also the State District Championship. Ron got together with some of his former Teen Town teammates in 1965-66 and played for Sarnia Drawbridge Inn. They won the Canadian National Senior A Championship. Ron is retired from Ameritech and lives in Fort Gratiot with his wife Joan.
